A 12 minute reproductive cycle is a huge reason they evolve so fast, but there's more to it. Our genome is about 20,000 times larger. The bacteria genome is not as protected as our's, our's is always shielded in it's nucleus and you need to get at our reproductive cells to cause damage. This is why bacteria can build new metabolic pathways in the time it takes a human couple to finish their honeymoon. Some people like to think that we are the dominant species but a disease may wipe us out any moment, and we could not kill them all if we tried. Bacteria have also been found eating every kind of hazardous waste, they have also been underground eating rocks. They also have been to Antarctica, and once inside a camera on the moon because someone forgot to sterilize it before it left Earth. Except bacteria can not survive one thing and that is they can't survive without water. Which is why there are no reports of bacteria on the moon.
